Wealdstone at War…..
As part of the research into the History of Wealdstone FC in the late 1990’s, the original list of names from the War Memorial (that had been placed inside the Lower Mead Ground) was found. The memorial was one of the first in any football ground just after WW1, but it was sadly lost when the ground was demolished in the early 1990’s.
In addition, the Jubilee Handbook from 1951 had added the names of those lost in WW2, but both lists were really just the names, with no detail. From that point, the search began to identify more about the players from both wars. It found that names had been mis-recorded both by the club and on the Wealdstone War Memorial, and further research into players of both eras identified players from both wars that had been missed off when the original lists were prepared.
Preceding the 100th Anniversary of the WW1 armistice (2018) a small group determined that they would provide a new permanent memorial to the fallen of Wealdstone FC. It is the stained glass memorial which stands in the clubhouse and is pictured below.
The research also provided the details for the two Wealdstone at War booklets – one for each of WW1 and WW2, and a link to purchase either or both of these is also provided on this page. They tell the story of the fallen, of the design of the memorial and also have details of other players and officials of Wealdstone FC and their service of their country through the conflicts, though these are not a final record as research continues and further information sometimes comes to light. No matter what however, the records of the fallen are as complete as is possible and we will continue to Remember Them When The Whistle Blows…..
