Foiled by faulty floodlights…..

AFTER numerous Wealdstone games being called off due to waterlogged pitches, when one can get played the floodlights fail and now Stones will have to haul their way down the M4 corridor once again sometime before the season’s end.

The lights first went out in first half stoppage time – the referee immediately blowing for half time. Partial lighting was soon achieved and many thought it perfectly adequate to play under. Alas, nothing noticeable happened for many minutes until the players returned to the field in dribs and drabs and proceeded to warm up.

The game eventually restarted half an hour late but lasted only 20 seconds before darkness fell again. Once the light was restored and failed a further time the referee had had enough and the match was abandoned.

In that first half Dean Papali had given Wealdstone a 24th minute lead, latching on to a superb cross-field pass from Graeme Montgomery before slotting under Yate keeper Puddy. The home side had equalised ten minutes later when Stones were caught napping from a short corner and Sims scored at the second attempt after Lee Carroll had saved the first.

But the lights were to be the evening’s winner.
