Fulham Under-21s recorded their first win in the National League Cup, defeating Wealdstone 2-0 at Grosvenor Vale.
In a dominant display, Hayden Mullins’ side had to be patient in the first-half with both goals arriving in the last few minutes of the first period. Lemar Gordon handed us the advantage in the 43rd minute before Terrell Works added a second just two minutes later.
Our Young Whites were playing some crisp, free-flowing stuff from the first whistle, passing through the thirds with confidence. A low cutback from Ollie Gofford caused Wealdstone goalkeeper Jacob Adams some problems, but the cross was eventually scrambled to safety.
Wealdstone’s best chance of the half fell to Micah Obiero, who did well to sort his feet out as the ball quickly fell at him in the box, but he fired over on the volley.
Works, confident after an eye-catching display against West Ham on Friday evening set up our first opportunity of the evening. The winger teased Enzio Boldewijn down the left side, fizzed the ball across the box to Callum Osmand, with Adams at full stretch to keep out his looping shot.
he sides exchanged long range shots on the half hour mark, with Gordon testing Adams with a driven left-footed effort from range, before McNally got down quickly to hold onto Christian Scott’s shot.
We ended the first-half with a quickfire double. Gordon gave us the lead with a powerful shot into the bottom corner but we weren’t satisfied with going into the break with just the one-goal advantage.
Just seconds after the restart, Works won a penalty after being fouled in the box. The winger took the spot kick, which was saved by Adams, but Works was quickest to react and fired home the rebound.
t took until the hour mark for the first meaningful chance of the second period to fall as Chris Donnell led a charge down the middle of the pitch, playing in Osmand who shot straight at Adams from a tight angle.
McNally was being made to work for his clean sheet, making a brilliant reactionary save to keep out Henry Sandat’s shot from point blank range after meeting a deep cross from the left.
With 15 minutes to play, Kristian Šekularac nearly scored a stunning individual goal to round off the evening, unleashing a strike from 25 yards only to be denied by a flying Adams.
Our U21s are next in action on Tuesday 26th November with a Premier League International Cup tie against Sparta Praha at Motspur Park. |
