Dover Ath 2 – 4 Wealdstone
2 - 4
SUCH is the close proximity of many sides in the Ryman Premier that Wealdstone, the form team, who were bottom only a few weeks ago, can start looking towards the top.
In this game they scored after three minutes with their first venture over the half-way line. Gary McKeown’s pass found Jermaine Beckford in plenty of space on the left and with time to assess his options before striking a dipping lob-cum-volley over keeper Zepherin into the far corner.
Dover had attacked with a passion right from the start and continued to do so after this. The scores were levelled just before the quarter of an hour mark when, after some defensive confusion, the ball broke for Armstrong to fire into an unguarded net.
At 1-1 the game quietened down considerably, and the remainder of the half was almost entirely bereft of scoring opportunities. Renner’s strike across Andy Carter that hit the base of a post just before the break stood out.
The early minutes of the second half could have sent the game in either sides’s direction. Beckford fired wide before hitting a ferocious shot straight at Zepherin.
Carter saved at the feet of Armstrong as Dover again attacked with movement and speed.
The result was decisively decided when Wealdstone scored three in eight minutes. Beckford started the move that led to Stones’ second goal, collecting the ball on the right, slipping past his marker and hitting a shot that Zepherin could only parry for Richard Jolly Richard Jolly to steer home..
Three minutes later Beckford and Shearer went up for a header eight yards from goal that fell kindly for the Stones man to prod in.
Then Robin Tucker, with some ball juggling in the box, created space to crack a left foot volley past the startled keeper.
An extra time goal from Wilkins, sliding in to meet a cross from the right, took some of the gloss off of a gutsy Wealdstone display.
