Howling defeat for Stones
JUST like last week, Wealdstone gifted two goals to the opposition but this time were unable to make a comeback and, to be truthful, never really looked like doing so.
Only three minutes were on the clock when Fergus Moore sliced a clearance from a cross vertically, Lee Carroll made a couple of steps to claim the ball but then hesitated and Gilroy, unopposed, planted a header into the corner.
It was just what Wealdstone didn’t want against a side who turned out to be one of the better ones seen so far this season.
Cook and Gilroy then went close with powerful efforts, but while there was only one goal between the sides Wealdstone at least had hope of an equaliser.
Unfortunately, just after the half-hour mark, a poor defensive header which should have been put out of play was picked up by Allison and from the early cross Seavill headed the second.
As an attacking force Wealdstone had rarely threatened although in isolated moments they did at least produce three worthwhile shots – from Dean Papali, Graeme Montgomery and Dean Clark that the home keeper, Snoddy, had to watch carefully to save.
Playing down the pronounced slope in the second half the Chippenham defence were easily able to contain what attempts Wealdstone could muster to score – only a long range effort from Matt Gooderick got close – and a couple of decent saves by Lee Carroll from Gilroy and sub Griffin kept the home side score at two.
Right-winger Allinson who had looked so effective in the first half got himself booked in the final minute of normal time and followed it moments later with a theatrical dive for a penalty following a challenge from O’Leary. Tempers flared for a time but calm returned when referee Attwell second yellow-carded him resulting in dismissal to the howls of the home fans.
There wasn’t enough time remaining for this to have the remotest effect on a poor Wealdstone performance, one in sharp contrast to the hopeful one of seven days previously.
