Braintree Town 1 – 0 Wealdstone
1 - 0
AN injury-time goal cruelly robbed Wealdstone of a deserved point at Braintree on Tuesday.
This was not an exciting game of football at all. Chances to score for either side were virtually non-existent, especially in a woeful first half. Effort, workrate and endeavor were all present, but goalmouth action was scarce at either end.
Andy Carter had a couple of regulation saves and catches to make. A few Braintree efforts were wide, as were some Wealdstone efforts at the other end plus Braintree’s Jones cleared over his own bar.
The game had entered its 93 minute when Tommy Williams appeared to be fouled on the wing. Referee Pollard saw no infringement and moments later, when a cross came in, all defenders missed it and Brayley volleyed past Andy Carter. The game restarted for twenty seconds before the full time whistle blew. It was a cruel ending for Wealdstone in a game that deserved to be goalless.
Already the Wealdstone season is becoming a frustrating one. No side played by the Stones has been any better than them, but four games have been lost to just the one goal.
The defence has looked particularly sound, but goalscoring must be becoming a problem area to manager Bartlett and his backup team. A solution must be found to the lack of creative quality in midfield and the lack of form of the strikers when chances present themselves.
