Scunthorpe Utd 4 – 1 Wealdstone
4 - 1
Wealdstone slumped to a miserable 4-1 defeat to Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park on Saturday.
First half goals from Cameron Wilson and Will Smith gave the hosts a comfortable lead going into the break. Wilson added another after half time before Nathan Ferguson gave the Stones hope, only for Jake Leake to add a fourth just two minutes later.
Stuart Maynard rung the changes from the side that lost 4-0 in midweek with Nathan Ferguson, Tarrelle Whittaker and Olufela Olomola returning to the eleven, Max Kretzschmar back from injury and Joel Taylor handed a full debut.
And it was almost a masterstroke just six minutes into the game when Taylor’s cross just avoided Olomola and nearly diverted into his own net by Ben Richards-Everton.
However, the day would take a turn on 11 minutes when Wilson saw his effort deflect in past Howes from the edge of the area to give the Iron the lead.
The Wealdstone keeper had to be alert in the first half to deny Wilson again and also Jacob Butterfield from 30 yards.
Olomola had Wealdstone’s best chance of the half catching keeper Aaron Chapman off his line, but his lobbed effort just looped wide.
It was 2-0 on the stroke of half time. A corner met the unmarked head of Smith from close range, who poked home after an initial point-blank stop from Howes.
Wilson grabbed his second just six minutes into the second half when Richie Bennett played him in from the edge of the area. The winger still had a tight finish to score past Howes, but he managed to find the far bottom corner.
Ferguson did give the Stones hope with 15 minutes to go, finding the top corner from 25 yards with a sweet strike.
But moments later that hope was extinguished. Scunthorpe full-back Leake won the ball in his own half and ran a good three-quarters of the pitch unchallenged before slotting past Howes to make it 4-1.
Scunthorpe sub Danny Elliott had a couple of chances to make it five late on, but the result remained as a lacklustre Stones head into the big derby game against Barnet next Saturday with Maynard given a lot to ponder for his out of sorts Stones side going into the game.
WEALDSTONE: Howes, Barker, Cook (c) (Barrett 86), Habergham, Taylor, Dyer, Ferguson, Kretzschmar (Charles 38), Whittaker (Andrews 46), Obiero, Olomola. Subs not used: Lo-Everton, Hutchinson.
