Wealdstone picked up a battling point away to Yeovil Town at Huish Park in a 0-0 draw on the May Bank Holiday after spending most of the game down to ten men.

Alex Dyer was sent off by referee Savvas Yianni on 37 minutes for a challenge on former Stones loanee Sonny Lo-Everton. But the Stones were resolute in the second half and had the lions share of the chances throughout the game.

Stones boss Stuart Maynard made three changes to the side that lost to Dagenham & Redbridge just 48 hours prior with Dyer, Nikola Tavares and David Sesay returning in place of Nathan Ferguson, Connor McAvoy and Rhys Browne who made the bench.

The visitors controlled the opening stages of the match with Charlie Cooper and Jaydn Mundle-Smith pulling stops out from former-Stones keeper Grant Smith.

Smith almost fell foul to a comical own goal on 24 minutes when he mis-controlled Lawson D’Ath’s back-pass only to see it just run wide of his post.

Stones beat Smith twice four minutes later but a heroic block on the line from Luke Wilkinson denied Dyer from close range, and then Morgan Williams on the line to deny Sesay from the rebound, before Josh Umerah put the next rebound just wide of the far post.

Jack Cook almost put the Stones in front on 36 minutes, pushing a fierce header from an Aaron Henry corner past Smith but then off the crossbar and over.

The game shifted moments later though when Dyer was sent off for a contentious challenge on his former Stones team-mate Lo-Everton.

Wealdstone rode out the remainder of the half with chances from Lo-Everton, Josh Neufville and Ben Barclay all dealt with by the Stones defence.

Yeovil failed to capitalise on the man advantage and it took until 66 minutes to craft a proper chance. Sub Dale Gorman’s free kick was palmed away by Sam Howes in the Stones goal.

The hosts best chance came a minute later when Cook’s clearance ricocheted off of Yeovil sub Reuben Reid into the path of Jack Robinson who put a shot wide when on the turn just six yards out.

Cook almost produced what would’ve been an unbelievable winner on 83 minutes, putting a 25-yard half volleyed effort toward the top corner only to be denied by the acrobatic Smith’s fingertips.

Yeovil rallied late in stoppage time but some heroic defending from Tavares denied Reid after he slipped past Cook and the chance to shoot opened up.

Stones rally now for the final home game of the season this Saturday at 3pm when King’s Lynn Town visit Grosvenor Vale. With offers on at the bar, a supporters club BBQ and end of season awards, we hope to see you all down there to toast another season in the National League and give the players and staff a deserved send off into the summer.

WEALDSTONE: Howes, Tavares, Cook, Okimo (c), Mundle-Smith, Dyer, Henry, Cooper, Sesay, Clayden (Browne 70), Umerah (Charles 65). Subs not used: Hearn, Mascoll, Shrowder.
