Wealdstone picked up a comfortable 2-0 victory away to Maidenhead United on Tuesday evening, courtesy of second half goals from Jack Cook and Rhys Browne.

Cook stabbed home an Aaron Henry free-kick on 65 minutes before Browne sealed the win with an exquisite finish from 20 yards.

Stones boss Stuart Maynard wrung the changes from Saturday’s defeat to Eastleigh with four made to the starting eleven, seeing captain Jerome Okimo, Jaydn Mundle-Smith, Charlie Cooper and Ira Jackson return to the side and also Medy Elito, Matt Buse and Jamie Mascoll returning to the squad via the bench.

The first half had an opening flurry of chances with Connor McAvoy heading just wide from 14 minutes from Henry’s corner.

Dan Sparkes fired over from the hosts minutes later from near the penalty spot when he should have at least worked George Wickens.

Wickens was worked on 27 minutes, having to be alert to tip Kane Ferdinand’s 25-yard effort round the post.

But ultimately chances in the second half faded and both sides settled into a rhythm and seemed content with how the game was panning out.

Former Stones defender Alan Massey had the first big chance of the second half, firing an optimistic effort just over from the halfway line after latching onto a Wickens clearance.

From then the Stones took control and lead when Cook lost his man at the far post to poke in a crossed free-kick from Charlton loanee Henry.

Henry had a chance of his own on 72 minutes. Seeing his 25-yard free-kick tipped around the post by keeper Harry Palmer, who had a late call-up following Dan Gyollai’s injury in the warm-ups.

Stones weren’t made to rue that and doubled their lead three minutes later. Sub Elito found Browne on the edge of the box and he placed a perfect shot into the far top corner out of Palmer’s reach.

Reece Smith had a late chance for the hosts but it would’ve been a mere consolation as Wealdstone left Berkshire with a deserved three points.

The Stones welcome fans back to The Vale this Saturday when Weymouth visit for a classic six-pointer at the foot of the table. It’s a 3pm kick off, do not miss it!

WEALDSTONE: Wickens, McAvoy, Cook, Okimo (c), Mundle-Smith, Henry, Cooper (Elito 67), Ferguson, Clayden, Browne (Umerah 85), Jackson (Mascoll 82). Subs not used: Buse, Dyer.
