WealdstoneWealdstone were made to rue their missed chances at Meadowbank as Stuart Maynard’s side went down 3-1 to the Wanderers in Surrey.
The game began in a typically frantic fashion, as Wanderers found space down the right, with star man James McShane heading just over from close range.
Tarryn Allarakhia thought he’d found the breakthrough when he neatly found the corner from just inside the box, but the flag was up for offside.
As both sides began to find their feet, Dorking punished some sloppy Stones defending. McShane threaded the needle, and Ryan Seager bundled in after his initial shot looped off Howes.
This served as a wake-up call for the Stones, and good work by Dom Hutchinson deserved a reward at the end of it. The wing-back drove down the flank, before his ball across goal evaded everyone.
It was déjà vu for Allarakhia moments later, as he once again finished neatly from the wing, but the flag went up again for offside.
After the break, the Stones started strongly, with neat work by Allarakhia teeing up Fela Olomola, but he couldn’t beat the Dorking defence.
Just five minutes into the second half, Allarakhia had his goal. The winger did well to retain the ball just outside the box, before finishing neatly into the bottom corner.
The Stones continued to press, and if it wasn’t for a superb save by Dan Lincoln, they would’ve taken the lead on the hour. A deep free kick from Gio McGregor was met by the head of Jack Cook, but Lincoln managed to block the goalbound effort.
Dorking had a golden chance to take the lead moments later, when Niall McManus was fed over-the-top of the Stones defence, but his volley flew over the Stones goal.
With twenty minutes left on the clock, Dorking retook the lead. Substitute Harry Ottaway finished well into the bottom corner after the Stones defence switched off.
New signing Sam Matthews was brought off the bench and came agonisingly close to a debut wondergoal. He unleashed a curler towards the bottom corner, but the ball flicked the post and went behind.
Dorking put the seal on the victory in added time, when Seager finished well from close range, following a good counter attack.
Ultimately it wasn’t to be for the Stones, and focus moves swiftly on to Tuesday night, when we welcome table-topping Notts County to Grosvenor Vale at 7:45PM.
