The beautiful game this certainly wasn’t as the strong blustery wind played a bigger part in the 90 minutes than any player.

Stones had the wind to their backs in the first half and forced Wivenhoe onto the defensive for the best part of the half but it was almost impossible to play an effective ball forward as the wind took hold and blew numerous passes out of play, Stones best effort, a Dave Ryan free kick early on but even that carried over the bar.

The highlight of the half was a throw by Tony Lock just before he went off injured – as he released the ball the wind blew and everyone watched as the ball sailed over the stand and out of the ground!

In the second half Stones defended further forward than Wivenhoe had done, and playing into the wind kept the ball low on occasions, enough to cause one or two problems – none more so that on 49 minutes when, chasing a ball on the left, Freeman kept it in play, squared to Morgan and he played the ball onto Jolly with his back to goal.

In one movement he turned and placed a deft chip just under the crossbar with the home keeper stranded.

There was little else to report as the game became more and more scrappy in the conditions, but Stones will be happy with the three points.
