So Unlucky…
A very young and due to injuries much changed Stones side took the field tonight against Whyteleafe, and with the side as it stood even the die hard felt Stones would be lucky to get anything from the game.
As the match started it seemed the fears were to be confirmed as most of the first half was played in and around the Stones Penalty box, although Charlie Leary in the Stones goal was rarely troubled, punching well and clearing a couple of crosses from under the bar. On the only two occasions he was beaten, defenders were well positioned to clear to safety.
Stones battling well as the half progressed, held the score at 0-0 at half time, although it seemed a matter of time before they cracked.
How different then was the second half, which saw Stones take the game to Whyteleafe and for long periods they were forced back, only threatening with half chances on the break.
Although Stones created a couple of chances, neither keeper was rarely troubled and in fact it was the 87th minute before Whyteleafe had a shot in anger in the second period, well saved by Leary.
With everyone counting down the seconds though, all Stones hard work was laid to waste when a quick break from Whyteleafe past a tired Stones defence saw Dillon slot home to give ‘Leafe a 1-0 lead, with the watch showing 44mins 58 seconds played in the second half.
From the kick off Stones forced a couple of Corners, and with eveyone in the box for the second, Whytleafe cleared the ball and broke away to score their second goal in injury time.
Honest Opinion? This performance had almost everything that Saturdays lacked – there was a spirit for the battle and a never say die quality which deserved a better result, but then that’s been the story of the season…
