Wealdstone 5 – 0 Great Wakering Rovers
5 - 0
A five nil score line would normally make you think of a classic performance, but this was not it. Stones took the lead after two minutes when a Rob Courtnage cross from a corner was headed home by Robin Tucker, and this was the start of an almost casual dominance by Wealdstone throughout the early stages, shots from Ryan, Julienne and Morgan also testing the visiting keeper.
On 25 minutes, Stones extended their lead when another Courtnage corner was headed on by Carvell, Jolly applying the final touch – another header – as the visiting defence stood static in the 6 yard box.
Despite their height advantage, the visitors looked poor at the back and Stones continued to cause problems right up to half time. Just before, on 40 minutes, it was another Courtnage cross this time met by Matt Carvell’s head which saw Stones take a 3-0 lead, and celebrations from Matt Carvell for his first goal in four years.
The second half was a non event as Stones lacked the killer punch and were content at times to stroke the ball around without really threatening, though, they did press on midway through the half, Great Wakering having failed to mount an attack at all.
Morgan had another header disallowed for a push and on 79 minutes Stones went 4 – 0 up when Dave Ryan struck a direct free kick, the goalkeeper coming off his line to collect, only to see the ball sail over his head and under the bar.
This sparked a further spell of pressure from Stones, and another corner, was crossed in and only partially cleared by the keeper under pressure from Morgan. The ball fell to Jolly who shot home from outside the box to give a convincing 5 – 0 score line, Stones not really having got above second gear.
