Wealdstone 4- 0 Banbury United
4 - 0
A 4-0 home win.
Yes, really.
A bright start from a tired Stones squad though the first half was a little laboured at times. Stones had the better of the early exchanges with Robinson and Papali causing problems for the visiting defence though struggling to find away past Alan Judge – called out of retirement for the fifth time at 47 – in the Banbury goal. On another day this may have been one of his shorter appearances as he stepped out of the penalty area clutching the ball in a race down with Theo Robinson, but on this occasion only received a yellow card..
Stones took the lead on 35 minutes from a Graeme Montgomery free kick, the slightest of touches from the head of Robinson enough to see the ball home and give the Stones a lead they just about deserved at half time.
The second half saw the visitors start the brightest with a couple of early efforts, one wide and one saved by Swain in the Stones goal, but they were further knocked back on 47 minutes when a sweet pass from Donnelley split the defence and allowed Papali a run on goal, his effort beating Judge in a 1 on 1.
Banbury were not quite finished however and only three very smart saves in quick succession from Swain kept the score at 2-0, and a fourth effort where he saved the first shot only for the rebound to fall to Baird, though Dellissier was on hand with a perfectly timed tackle to prevent the final shot.
This lifted Stones and they pushed forward in droves, Montgomery, papali, Robinson and O’Leary seeing efforts blocked or saved, before Donnelly again laid a defence splitting pass into the path of Papali and again he beat Judge 1 on 1 close in to give the Stones a 3-0 lead on 72 minutes.
The remainder of the game followed a similar pattern as Stones remained dominant throughout the half, Sullivan and Blossom at the back for Banbury playing their part in preventing further score, until the 88th minute when Andre Dellissier seemed to almost get the ball under control as he broke fully fifty yard from the Stones box, his pass to Simon Martin almost did enough for the forward to turn before the ball weaved through to Theo Robinson who in some kind of weird synchronicity, managed to toe-poke Stones fourth past Judge low down…..
Four games left, it’s in our own hands.
