Oxford’s Blue

Another sunny afternoon and a far better performance from Wealdstone saw them overcome Oxford at the White Lion Ground by 3 – 0 to send the visitors home with nothing but the blues.

Stones started very brightly and were soon in their stride, putting the Oxford defence under pressure from the off. Their reward was to come on four minutes when Jason Shaw passed the ball wide to Dennis Greene, his cross behind the Oxford defence was met by Bryan Hammatt who scored Stones opener.

The remainder of the first half saw Stone supress home a positional advantage without creating more than half chances, but Oxford struggled to clear their own half. Stones best chance came on 31 minutes when a shot from Somers was pushed onto the post and away by the visiting keeper.

In the second half Stones again started the sharper and soon had the visiting defence back pedalling again, Greene and Hammatt going close before on 50 minutes a Chandler header just passed the post from a corner with the keeper rooted to the spot. Stones kept up the pressure amid some strong challenges from an ever more desperate defence, Dennis Greene denied with a diving header blocked on the line by the goalkeeper.

Wealdstone increased their lead on 58 minutes when Bryan Hammatt headed home his and Stones second from a Fergus Moore corner. Oxford still struggled to clear their lines and created very little, just one chance forcing a save from Andy Carter in the home goal.

Stones were denied again when Greene put substitute Tom Bryson through, his shot was blocked by the keeper and rebounded to Greene whose well struck shot hit the post and rebounded to safety. Stones though did manage to increase their score on 89 minutes when a through ball found Sub Ricky Pither. His cool control took him into the box and with only the keeper to beat he shot low and hard into the corner scoring his first league goal for the Club.
