Wood nailed

Well almost anyway!

A match that started so well for Wealdstone after recent performances, as they really should have taken the lead as early as the third minute, only for Bryan Hammatt and Carl Hunt to be denied by the visiting goalkeeper, the match starting at a tremendous pace, and Wealdstone without doubt, on top.

In fact it was Northwood that opened the scoring as a poor return pass from a throw in saw stones give the ball away on the half way line, it was played forward to Knight who ran on to the box, cut inside a challenge and drilled a low shot past Andy Carter on 14 minutes, with the visitors first attempt on goal.

stones continued to press, Hammatt and Scarlet both unlucky not to equalise, before a Swaysland header was cleared from under the bar. Another break saw Northwood threaten again, and this time a missed challenge allowed the visitors to extend their lead when the cross found Knight, unmarked in the box and he shot home for ‘Wood’s second goal on 21 minutes.

Still Wealdstone continued to dominate proceedings creating a number of chances only to see Northwood scramble the ball away and maintain their 2 – 0 lead until half time.

The second half again saw Stones on top, and in the 57th minute a cross from Scarlet found Swaysland who headed home. Stones pressed on again, and despite Northwood creating a couple of half chances, they never really threatened to extend their lead, and on 68 minutes a cross from Hammatt found Swaysland again and he made no mistake with the second goal to bring Stones level.

Shortly after, sub Bamgbola was unlucky when he ran onto a loose ball out wide, cut inside his man and saw his shot beat Riordan in goal only to come back to him off the upright.

Both sides created chances as the match progressed, but again it was Stones who seemed more likely to score, even though in the last seconds Tucker was sent off harshly, for a challenge on Yaku – Northwood blasting the free kick well high and wide.

In the end the points were shared, but Stones can feel hard done by, having not taken all three.
