Wealdstone 2 – 2 Berkhamsted Town
2 - 2
In a match that started at a great pace, Wealdstone were soon on top, and in the first fifteen minutes, they really should have taken the lead. Morgan, Jolly, Willimas and Ryan all going close as Stones put the visiting defence under great pressure.
The match turned however on 21 minutes when Berkhamsted wee awarded a free kick and the ball was passed sideways to Ben Hammond whose excellent strike from 25 yards gave Carter no chance in the Stones goal, and the visitors took the lead with their first shot of the match.
This disrupted Stones play and Berkhamsted took control of the game as Wealdstone lost both shape and composure, the visitors looking more likely to increase their lead as the half went on. In the five or so minutes before half time, Stones however did regain their earlier form and began to pressure the visitors once more.
Among a flurry of heavy challenges and three booking for the visiting defenders, Stones were awarded a penalty when Williams was brought down, and after a couple of minutes delay, he scored the ensuing penalty to leave things equal at half time.
The second half saw Stones again put their opponents under consistent pressure and again force numerous saves and clearances from the visiting defence, Williams, Morgan, Carter, Carvell and Ryan again all going close when on other days they may have scored but it was another free kick on 61 minutes that allowed Stones to take the lead.
Williams was again fouled and took the kick himself, this time striking an excellent direct shot from 25 yards into the top corner of the net to give Wealdstone a 2-1 lead.
Stones continued to press but were unable to increase their lead as a combination of saves, bodies and misplaced efforts preserved the Berkhampstead goal, all this interspersed with sporadic efforts from the visitors who did however twice hit the woodwork. With the clock running down, Berkhamsted seemed to realise they still had a chance and they forced Stones back.
A Freekick on the left was cleared only for a corner, and this too was played from side to side in the box as Stones struggled to clear their lines, the eventual cross headed home by Hall for an equaliser, leaving the final score 2 – 2.
A game very much where Stones dropped two points.
