Wealdstone 2 – 1 Uxbridge
2 - 1
U’s Bridged
They say that in football you make your own luck. I don’t think Wealdstone have been that unlucky this season so on tonight’s showing I can only assume Uxbridge have had enormous slices of luck all season.
How Stones came a way with three points I don’t think I’ll ever understand, but they did.
From the start Uxbridge forced Wealdstone back deep into their own half with a series of strong attacking moves, three times in the opening few minutes forcing Carter into good saves and by the time the half was twenty minutes old, twice Wealdstone had cleared off their own line as well, their limited attacks coming from breakaways, in some cases started with long clearances.
It was from one of these though that the ball fell to Hammatt out wide, he attacked the box and played the ball square to Shaw who was tripped as he ran into the box, Bryan Hammatt scoring from the penalty to give Stones a somewhat lucky lead which they held until half time.
The second half started in a similar vein, Uxbridge again streaming forward although Wealdstone’s defence had become a little less frantic, and some good football saw Stones start to get a grip on the game. Good work by Somers on the left saw Tilbury collect the ball and he looked up and curled a sweet shot over the visiting keeper from 25 yards in the 55th minute to extend Stones lead, but this again saw Uxbridge take the game to Wealdstone as they searched for a way back in.
A free kick on the right hand side gave them a chance and the cross was met well by the unmarked Bamford to make the score 2 – 1 on the hour. Uxbridge continued to press, and Wealdstone continued to clear their lines when, with the visitors on top, a floodlight failure on 70 minutes saw the game stopped for five minutes. Wealdstone gathered their composure and with the aid of two substitutions came back stronger as the game restarted, limiting the visitors, despite their pressure, to half chances for the remainder of the match, Wealdstone gaining a fortunate three points with a 2-1 win.
