Wealdstone 2 – 1 Banbury United
2 - 1
Three days further on and a couple of enforced changes saw Tommy Williams and Chris Cahill return to the starting line-up, and it was Stones who took the game by the scruff of the neck from the kick off.
It seemed that there were wave after wave of attacks and chances as Stones gave their visitors no time to settle and no space to play – inn fact Banbury didn’t have an effort on target for the whole of the first half, while Stones through Michnowicz, McKeown, Jolly, Morgan and Bubb could have taken the lead on numerous occasions. Perhaps the most likely was what seemed to be a cast iron penalty to everyone except the Referee when Tricker brought down Morgan (the keeper later admitting it was a foul), but it wasn’t to be and despite almost total dominance of the first half, the score remained 0 – 0.
It was Wealdstone that started strongest in the second half too, again forcing the visitors back almost from the kick off, and they finally got the breakthrough on 65 minutes when Bubb perfectly met a cross from the right to head home. almost a quarter of an hour later and it was 2 – 0 and continued Stones pressure resulted in Morgan scoring a second goal after good work in the box.
It wasn’t until the last ten minutes of normal time that Banbury broke forward with any confidence, and they did pull one goal back to set the nerves going on 86 minutes when Ollie Stanbridge scored from the edge of the box. This galvanized the visitors and they made further forays forward during the 6 minutes of added time, but Stones defence held form and it’s Wealdstone that will be in the hat for Monday’s draw, and hopefully they will take their confidence from this win into their next league match on Saturday week when they play host to Harrow Borough in the first ever league meeting between the two local rivals.
