After the first twenty minutes which saw both sides play some neat though non productive football, the game changed in Stones favour on 24 when Dave Ryan was on hand to nod home a Burrell free kick. Although scored with the aid of his ear and his shoulder, justice was perhaps done as moments earlier Stones had been denied a penalty when a two footed challenge from behind felled Jolly, both Linesman and Referee waving play on!

There was a cracking finish to the first half, with Jermaine Beckford scoring the goal of the season (so far) with a 30-yard floater into the top corner to put us 2-0 ahead and effectively sink the Ridgeons League side, but there was more to the goal than that as Jolly collected the ball wide left with a backheel over his body to keep the ball in play.

He then strode forward before playing the ball into Beckford’s path wide on the left, Beckford half turning inside as with his first touch he elegantly curled the ball with his right foot high and wide of the visiting keeper and into th net.

The second half again saw Stones on top, and Richard Jolly had one goal disallowed before finally scoring Stones third on 67 minutes with a header from close range, wrapping up a 2nd Qualifying Round trip to Banstead in a fortnight, it was no more than an efficient Stones performance deserved.

WEALDSTONE saw off the spirited challenge of Rigeons League One side Stanway Rovers in this FA Cup First Qualifying Round replay on Tuesday night at Chestnut Avenue.

It took just one minute for the first opportunity, when Gary Burrell found himself free on the left but shot tamely at goalkeeper Michael Church.

Three minutes later Dave Ryan put Jermaine Beckford through but the Stones forward headed into the keeper’s grateful arms.

The visitors twice might have gone ahead in the early stages, first through Ray Turner who shot over the bar when well placed and shortly after via the Scott Witney who shot tamely at Russell Ling.

On 23 minutes Jolly was denied a clear penalty when put through but after Beckford had been upended on the right a minute later, Burrell swung in a teasing free-kick that Ryan rose to and planted his header firmly into the net.

Stones grew in confidence and started playing some attractive football.

On the half hour a last ditch tackle prevented Beckford from increasing the lead. The same player curled a good shot wide four minutes later while on 42 minutes an excellent sweeping move involving Harding and Jolly ended with Burrell shooting just over the bar.

It was no surprise when Beckford and Jolly exchanged clever passes before the former chipped a magnificent 30 yard goal over the stranded Church.

Stanway started the second half brightly and only a foul from Ashton prevented Callender from moving into a dangerous position. Callender was again involved when he capitalised on Ashton failing to make an interception. Only a superb last ditch tackle from Lee Chappell saved the day.

Callender was booked just minutes later for dissent following a Wealdstone corner. The kick was half cleared to Beckford who adjusted his balance to send in a shot expertly tipped over.

Jolly notched his first and the home team’s third goal when he stooped to head in an excellent cross from Andy Keepence.

The remaining twenty minutes saw Stones repeatedly threaten, the best opportunities falling to Burrell twice and Beckford.

Stones now face a trip to Banstead Athletic in the next round on 24 September.
