Wealdstone 1 – 1 Bedford Town
1 - 1
The Eagle’s Landed…
But some of their supporters were left with egg on their faces!
Not 250 visiting fans, but nearer 100 – still far more than most clubs bring to the White Lion, but the promised massacre on the field did not threaten let alone materialise.
Bedford certainly had the majority of the possession but the spirit and passion of the Stones side along with heart defending and (at last) a little bit of luck was enough to keep Stones in a battle that both sides could have won.
A number of half chances in the early minutes for both sides, Tilbury and Carter going close for Stones, and as the game progressed, Stones came more to the fore, only to concede a penalty on thirty minutes, Butterfield caught out in the box. Watts made the right choice with his dive, and may have had the shot covered but he would have been as relieved as anyone to collect the ball as it came back off the post.
As the half progressed, Stones pressed harder and were rewarded on 44 minutes when a run from Jones on the right saw his cross knocked into his own net by Bedford captain, Williams to give Stones the lead. Williams must have a soft spot for Stones as it was he who scored our goal at Bedford, heading in from a Jones cross!
The second half saw Bedford press hard from the kick off and they equalised on fifty minutes, a good cross well finished by Drew who had previously missed the penalty.
Both sides pressed on for the remainder of the half, Bedford having a goal disallowed for offside, although Stones marking was slack, and for the last five minutes Stones were kept very much on the back foot but defended well to preserve a point.
Honest Opinion? Like last week, the passion and effort did enough to suggest Stones will not give up, this time though they got the point they deserved.
