A dour midfield struggle for most of the match as Stones battled against a tall, strong Hornchurch side.

There were few chances, but Stones had the better of what there were, Shaw and Swaysland testing Wood in the first half with the few chances created. At the other end, Carter was forced to make a double reaction save as Stones failed to clear a corner, but that was his main contribution to the match as Hornchurch were marshalled well by the Stones defence, Ryan and Shaw defending well in the middle of the park.

Hornchurch had their best spell either side of half time, and in the second half particularly ‘got on top’ of Stones, but they created little and only called on Carter to save with a well directed corner, cleared to safety.

Two substitutions, Hercules and Beckford replacing Morgan and Courtnage changed the nature of the game with Stones gaining more width and forcing the visitors onto the back foot and suddenly opening the game up. Beckford, Swaysland and Ryan all saw shots saved before in the 86th minute Dave Ryan got to a free kick and headed into the net to give Stones the points.
