Aylesbury’s Duck

What a difference 48 hours can make.

After a performance that had the fans at players throats on Thursday evening, the players gave the perfect reaction today, beating league leaders Aylesbury 1-0 and it was thoroughly deserved.

Stones started facing a strong wind and a solid Aylesbury side, but they defended capably in the opening exchanges, coming more and more into the game as the half progressed. They defended well enough that David Godfrey making his debut in goal only had one save to make in the whole match, as Stones midfield battled and hustled Aylesbury, not allowing them any time on the ball, consistently breaking down the visitors attacks.

Going forward, Bryan Hammatt , playing in midfield attacked well, and defended well when required, going forward, his understanding with Andre Scarlet combining to open opportunities, while Fergus Moore overlapping on the left frequently put in crosses to keep the visitors under pressure. In the centre of Midfield, Danny Tilbury’s tenacity and Martin Carter’s composure also gave the Stones a solid base to build from, Swaysland, Tilbury, Morgan and Hammatt all going close as Wealdstone began to dominate.

In the second half the wind dropped which suited both sides, yet again it was Wealdstone who showed the passion and ability that has been under used in recent games. The only goal came on 56 minutes as Swaysland broke down the right. His cross was well met on the volley by Tyronne Hercules. The visiting keeper could only palm the shot away and it was Marvin Morgan that ran in to score from close range. He also saw headers from crosses by Moore and Scarlett go just wide as he looked to extend Stones’ lead.

Despite increasing pressure from the visitors as the half progressed, Horner, Tucker, Hercules and Moore dealt capably with everything that Aylesbury offered.

Stones were the better side and got what they deserved, something that has been recently lacking.
