Wealdstone 0 – 1 Harlow Town
0 - 1
Stones yet again failed to beat an opponent despite being the better side through most of this match, yet failing to score. In fact, with nine opportunities during the game, the visiting keeper was only forced into two saves as nerves set in and shots were blasted high and wide from close in on a number of occasions.
The score could have been 3 – 3 after twenty minutes as a fast paced game swung end to end, but poor finishing ensured that neither keeper was troubled.
On the half hour Stones almost took the lead as a far post cross from Marvin Morgan struck the post – the keeper well beaten – but an inch more an Ben Alexander would have made contact to deflect the ball home.
The only goal of the match came from a direct free kick on 44 minutes, a poorly positioned wall allowing a shot to be curled just inside the post with Andy Carter rooted to the spot.
The second half followed a similar patter with most of the play at both ends breaking down outside the box, but again Stones had the best two chances, the first a corner which was scrambled away eventually, the second, a free kick spilled by the visiting keeper which Cumberbatch and Morgan followed in – the first rebound saved ‘onto’ the second player and this rebound too turned away.
A disappointing result and one that consigns the rest of the season to the bin, as the best we can hope for now is that there are some personnel changes as the club builds for next season.
