St Albans City 4 – 0 Wealdstone
4 - 0
Newly promoted Wealdstone suffered a four-goal defeat at Clarence Park on Tuesday evening as they were beaten by National League South side St Albans City.
First half goals from Zane Banton, Munashe Sundire and Shaun Jeffers sent the Saints into a commanding lead at the break, with Kyran Wiltshire firing a second half strike to complete the haul for the home side.
The Stones dominated possession in the early stages of the match, but they were unable to galvanise any goal scoring opportunities.
Instead, the Saints, who had experienced a quiet opening period, took an unexpected lead in the 24th minute, as Banton smashed home past Harry Isted from Sundire’s drilled cross.
Two minutes later, St Albans City doubled their advantage as Sundire powered into the box and coolly slotted past Isted into the far corner.
The Stones’ fortunes took a further dent in the 41st minute when the referee awarded a penalty to the Saints for a foul on Jeffers; he stepped up and duly converted from the spot to treble the hosts lead.
Five minutes into the second half, the Saints extended their advantage even further as Wiltshire skipped through and fired past Isted into the roof of the net.
The Stones had the chance to reduce the deficit in the 59th minute when Dan Wishart was brought down in the box, but Ross Lafayette’s penalty was saved by Michael Johnson.
Manager Dean Brennan made six substitutions in the 64th minute which rejuvenated the visitors, but the home side held firm for a fine victory and clean sheet over their higher division counterparts.
