Romford 0 – 2 Wealdstone

Wealdstone this evening secured their Division 1 status for another year with a 2-0 away win against Romford.
In a match where the tension was evident early on, albeit shown by the Referee who contrived to miss a blatant penalty after four minutes when Morgan was fouled, then to compound it by booking Morgan for a supposed dive, only to follow this some four minutes later booking Holmes for a comment made off the ball, it seemed that he had lost touch with the game.
A number of strong challenges from both sides went totally unpunished and some mystifying decisions spoiled any flow there was in the game.
Stones however were dominant and continually threatened against a Romford team who looked resolved to their fate, but it wasn’t until the 40th minute when an excellent ball from Norman split the home defence and Holmes took the ball, striking it low and hard from thirty five yards without breaking stride, to give Stones the lead.
The second half was a better spectacle, Stones working hard and creating a number of chances – Tilbury Holmes and Morgan could all have scored before Morgan won a ball under challenge in the six yard box and in the resulting scramble the ball broke to Butterfield who scored the second from close range.
The game then got niggly for a while but Stones maintained their composure and really ran out easy winners against a Romford side who rarely offered much throughout the game.
Honest Opinion? It wasn’t pretty at times but it was enough.
