Northwood 1 – 2 Wealdstone
1 - 2
Looking to build on the home win on Saturday, Manager Gordon Bartlett only made one change to the line-up and that was on the bench where new signing Dave Lawrence made his first appearance. Dave had been with Hillingdon Borough last season, and this year had trialled for Cambridge United either side of a goal scoring appearance for the Stones in the Pre-Season match with Harrow Boro. Now surplus to requirements at Cambridge, Gordon secured his signature at the weekend.
Stones took the game to their hosts from the start, early chances from Papali and Gooderick not enough to force the breakthrough, and as the half progressed Northwood came more into the game and could have taken the lead themselves with two efforts late in the half.
A half time team talk that saw the Stones management ask for more bodies and movement in the opponents box was rewarded in 50 seconds, as Carl Martin stole in late and drove the ball home to give the Stones the lead with his first Senior goal for the club.
Northwood equalised after about 65 minutes as they battled hard to take the points at home, but it wasn’t to be as late on, Dave Lawrence held the ball up well before laying a pass into the path of Graeme Montgomery and his left foot shot was enough to give the Stones the points with a 2-1 win.
