At Hitchin, Stones opened the scoring through Dave Lawrence in the first few minutes, but conceded two goals in two minutes around the half hour to fall behind. An own goal gave Stones the equaliser before half time.

In the second half, Hitchin, who were the better side, re-established their lead on the hour and with Stones pushing for an equaliser, they made the game safe with a fourth late on.
