Cheshunt 3 – 2 Wealdstone
3 - 2
What a difference a few days can make!. The same players the same formation but a performance that showed up just how poorly the team had performed at Dunstable, yet the result was the same as Stones lost at Cheshunt.
The home side started the brighter trying to make use of the speed of their forwards, but Stones defended well and Andy Carter had no problems in goal as the Stones defence held firm, at the same time, Stones started to push on aand won a series of corners and free kicks around the Cheshunt box as the home side looked a little shaky in defence.
On 17 minutes though there was a switch – Hemmerdinger was caught in two minds and lost the ball, allowing Wales to run through and shoot past the flat footed Carter, stranded in his penalty box.
Stones continued to press and equalised five minutes later when a sweet Tommy Williams corner was met by Robin Tucker who headed home.
The remainder of the first half was even with both sides creating half chances and both defences doing enough to prevent their opponents from scoring – Stones however having the better of the possession but that counts for little as the game was to prove.
The second half started evenly but on 53 minutes a missed challenge out on the bye line allowed a home forward to run on and his cross found Aransiba running into the back of the box – his shot good enough to score despite the attempt of Carter who could only deflect the ball into the corner to give the home side a somewhat fortunate lead.
Stones by now were on top of the game despite the score and could have equalised when a cross was deflected to Morgan but his first time volley was well blocked by Ling, the ball creeping over the bar to safety, and a few minutes later, a great strike from Williams hit the square crossbar and again deflected away safely.
With Robin Tucker struggling with a foot injury, Billy Amartiefio came on and four minutes later he scored the equaliser – again a corner well met and headed home with some power for his first goal in five years!!
Stones continued to force the visitors back, allowing them only breaks out of defence, but as the game came to a close it was Cheshunt that started to force the Stones into defence. The final minute saw Cheshunt win two quick corners – the second when a ball was trapped rather than cleared by Fisher – and it was from this that Cheshunt stole the points. The cross was cleared outside the box but the defence was static, not closing the man down as it fell to Watters and his first time volley was good enough to win the game.
A disappointing result no doubt, but a great deal more positive a performance from the side as a whole and another where stones were the better side yet failed to come away with even a share of the spoils.
