Back Door

Wealdstone’s thin squad is telling and their defensive frailty beginning to show, as after a competent first half performance, and at times controlling the match against Carshalton, they were beaten three times from set pieces, all at the back post.

The first half was an even affair, Wealdstone having the better of the chances early on, and Hammatt was unlucky with a shot from 35 yards which hit the inside of the post before running clear with the home goalkeeper well beaten after 10 minutes. Stones were content to let the home side have the ball in midfield, closing down the forwards as the ball came forward and building patient attacks from defence, Carshalton’s first chance being a shot well over on 15 minutes.

As the half progressed a comfortable Stones came more to the fore and Hammatt again broke through on 33 minutes, his shot saved by the goalkeeper rushing out, Carshalton limited to nothing more than half chances in the first period, and on a better day Stones may well have lead at the interval.

The second half saw Carshalton start the better, forcing a number of early corners and from one of these, a late run to the back of the box saw Massey score to give the home side the lead.

Stones were now chasing the game and despite going close through Greene and Hammatt, the home side extended their lead from another corner on 78 minutes, this time York arriving late and making no mistake.

The third home goal on 89 minutes came from a similar opportunity, this time Carter making another excellent parry only to see Danny Moore react quickest to shoot past the sprawling keeper. Carshalton’s 3-0 win may have flattered them a little as they didn’t threaten Stones in open play, but taking their three chances from poor defending was enough on the day.
