Stones Get Their Rocks Off !!
A game of two halves doesn’t do justice to this game.
In front of over 100 travelling fans and in front of six very tired walkers, Stones had a corner after 25 seconds, a shot (miscued) by Jones after a minute and a half, and aside from a 35yard free kick from Carl Holmes on the half hour, it was at the most lethargic, listless performance of the season !
Indeed, Stones trouped off at half time 1-0 down when with better finishing from Bognor, 5-0 would not have been an exaggeration. The goal Bognor did score wasn’t a classic either, a cross swirling in the wind deceived Watts and as he challenged to collect, a looping header from Scammell drifted away from him and just inside the far post as Watts scrambled back but couldn’t recover. The remainder of the half was played just outside Stones penalty box and it seemed certain just to be a matter of time before the Rocks increased their lead.
The second half started in similar vein, although Dicker was pushed on which gave Stones a little more of the ball in midfield, and on 57 minutes, Dicker cut the ball back to Jones, he played it wide to Joyce whose ball in found Carter who equalised from inside the box. This at least sparked some life into the Stones and the fans who were in excellent voice once again.
On 71 minutes, a cross found Scammel and his header from 12 yards was good enough to give the home side the lead again, although Stones almost equalised when a shot from Holmes was parried onto the post and away by the home keeper. On 80 minutes, Morgan, on for Jones, held off a defender well while running on to a through ball from Lamb, two touches and he was in the box where he slotted the ball through the keepers legs to give Stones a somewhat fortunate equaliser.
Bognor pressed on again to try and seal the three points their possession perhaps deserved, but it was on 88 minutes when a corner again broke to Holmes in the box, his shot was again parried by the home keeper but this time not well enough to prevent it crossing the line.
Honest Opinion? If Stones were up in court on Monday for this result they’d get ten years. ’bout time we got a bit of luck for the times we should have got a result this season and didn’t.
