Rock On!

A stoic defensive performance in the second half saw Stones come away from Bognor with all three points, as they show the form their capable of, finally believing in themselves as much as others believe in them.

An exciting first half saw both sides create chances, although Wealdstone perhaps had the edge, forcing a couple of saves from the home keeper, while David Godfrey was less troubled in the Stones goal as a well marshalled defence coped with the Bognor forwards.

Hercules, Scarlet, Marie-Saint and Carter worked well in midfield and created a number of opportunities for Morgan and Swaysland to press on and it was a combination of these players that saw Stones take the lead on 27 minutes.

Defending a corner, the ball was cleared to Marvin Morgan wide on the left. He ran on beating on man and then played an excellent ball across the field to the on rushing Swaysland who collected just outside the box. He cut into the box and shot only for the home keeper to get a hand on the ball, parrying back to Swaysland, who instead of shooting, laid a square ball into the path of Carter, who shot low into the corner of the net to give Stones the lead.

The remainder of the half was even, both sides pressing in spells, and both defences holding their own.

The second half was a different matter, as Bognor improved their build up play and forced Stones deep into their own half for long spells, only rare breaks relieving the pressure, but again, the defence held firm, Horner and Moore both clearing their lines well and quelling everything that was thrown at them to the extent that Godfrey only had to deal with half chances.

That was until the 75h minute, when good work created an opportunity for Howell, whose shot seemed destined to be the equaliser until 6’5″ Godfrey, at full stretch, touched the ball onto the post and away. It was Bognor’s bets chance and despite all their pressure, they created little threat in front of goal, Stones holding on for their second win in three days.
