WealdstoneOn a dry sunny day and on a rock hard pitch the Vanarama National League South draw specialists played out an end of season game with little at stake for both teams that will be remembered for a wonder strike to put the host’s ahead and a brace from Jefferson Louis to give the Stones all three points.
With Bradley Hudson-Odoi missing through injury the starting eleven had Jack Smith in at left back, Dale Binns pushed forward into a left midfield role and Tom Cadmore alongside Elliott Godfrey in the middle. Matt Ball was on the bench.
In an evenly contested first half Stones showed the greater intent, lots of possession, with good use of the pace and skill of Binns in a more attacking role on the left however overall there was little end product and the home keeper was rarely tested. The hosts were quite happy to get bodies behind the ball with Jonathan North enjoying a quiet 45 minutes. The highlight of the half was a Scott Davies corner on the right which instead of the usual delivery to the back post was driven hard and low around knee height into the 6 yard box which defenders and attackers watched fizz across the crowded goal as something almost to be avoided…..
At the start of the second half Stones were forced to make a change, skipper Wes Parker being replaced by Jefferson Louis due to a knock, Tom Cadmore dropping into a more familiar position alongside Tom Hamblin in the back four.
Again the opening few minutes of the second half saw neither side wanting to take the initiative and the game had all the hallmarks of a draw, Shaun Lucien replaced James Demetriou on 64 minutes, just 6 minutes later it was all change as the game sparked into life with an audacious lob from James Afull from some 45 yards caught out Jonathan North to give the hosts the lead much to the surprise of the home players and fans alike.
Stones restored parity within 2 minutes, a Tom Hamblin thumping header beat the keeper all ends up but hit the right hand post and came back into play, the ever alert Jefferson Louis was the quickest to pick-up the rebound and drill the ball into the opposite side of the goal with home keeper well beaten.
Scott McGleish replaced Dale Binns, Stones were dominating play now and took the lead on 81 minutes when Joshua McLeod-Urquhart found space down the right and his cross into the box was diverted out of play by the arm of the left back. The Referee’s assistant, who was less 10 yards away, flagged for a penalty, which was duly dispatched by Jefferson Louis into the bottom right corner of the goal past the despairing dive of the keeper.
Stones created a couple more chances but the final output was somewhat wayward.
At the final whistle the circa 270 Stones fans, who had made a dine throughout, cheered and applauded the Stones players and management for their efforts as the season came to a close.
