Edgware TownWealdstone came back from two goals down to beat Edgware Town 3-2 in the 2nd Round of the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup, with super-sub Shaun Lucien grabbing the winner late on. It was an unconvincing display from the Stones, particularly with a woeful first-half that saw Wealdstone two goals down against a side four divisions below them in Spartan South Midlands Football League Division One.
The Stones made nine changes to the team that beat Brockenhurst 5-1 in the FA Cup Qualifying, with only Josh Urquhart and Oliver Duffy keeping their places in the starting line-up. Early on, Tyler Christian-Law and Scott Davies had chances from outside the box, while Paul Marks and Jay Molloy shot long-range efforts over for Edgware Town.
Jack Smith gave Edgware Town a shock lead as he curled in a beautiful effort from 20 yards out. Edgware had a penalty appeal turned away as Jay Molloy went down in the box after a challenge from Carl Martin. Soon after, Molloy made it 2-0 to the Wares, sending shockwaves across Grosvenor Vale, as he turned past the hapless Wealdstone defence to shoot past Garry Malone.
In the second half, two quick fire goals fired the Stones back in the game. Firstly, Josh Hutchinson volleyed home from a Athanasios Lampernakis cross, and then skipper Michael Corcoran scored a scrappy goal from a Scott Davies free-kick, although Edgware remonstrated hard that the ball didn’t cross the line.
After a Wealdstone penalty appeal was turned away, Bradley Hudson-Odoi hit the bar with a beautiful curling effort from outside the box. Scott Davies picked up an injury and came off for Matthew Ball, and Hudson-Odoi was substituted for Shaun Lucien.
Josh Hutchinson forced a good save from Sam Styles and shot over from the resulting corner. It was substitute Shaun Lucien who grabbed the winner as two Wealdstone volleys were parried out by Styles and the lose ball finally fell to Lucien who fired home.
Nick Turner shot over with the goal at his mercy for Edgware, while Scott McGleish and Shaun Lucien had chances to finish the game for Wealdstone. Paul Marks was sent off late on for a second bookable offence as he made a high challenge on Athanasios Lampernakis. The Stones’ victory makes it four wins on the bounce and sets them up nicely for their tough away trip to Havant & Waterlooville on Saturday albeit with a much changed side.
