wealdstone_vs_dover_athletic_180715_039Vanarama National side Dover Athletic came out the strongest against their South Division opponents in what was a hard fought and competitive friendly, winning the Brian Collin Memorial Shield in the process.

Although Stones had no fewer than eight first team players unavailable for this match they nevertheless competed well throughout but just lacked the finishing qualities of the away side.Stones opened with an early chance but Johnny Wright’s strike was easily held by Whites keeper Mitch Walker. Dover looked sharp thoughout and closed down the home side quickly and efficiently with their wide man Ricky Miller looking dangerous on the break.

After trialist Sean Bonnet-Johnson missed out on a good opportunity, Dover broke through the middle and an unmarked Miller stroked home emphatically past Stones keeper Tim Brown. In what was a physically competitive encounter, Stones Micky Corcoran was tigerish in the midfield but was missed when Wes Parker limped off and the Northern Irishman shored up the defence in the second period.

Stones almost levelled the scores immediately after the restart but Jefferson Louis’s shot by again held comfortably by Walker. With multiple substitutions for Wealdstone in the second half the game became less intense as Dover’s fitness and slicker passing game told. The away side wrapped up the scoring on 50 minutes when big front man Duane Ofori Acheapong headed in at the near post after a good cross from the lively Tom Murphy was expertly arrowed in. Stones best effort in the half came from Josh Hutchison but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Wealdstone: Brown (Tim), Dan Brown, Watts, Parker, Urquart, Godfrey, Wright, Corcoran, Hutchinson, Bonnet-Johnson, Lucien. Subs used: Louis, Hope, Tison-Lascaris, McGleish. Not used: Malone (GK), Christian–Law &  Cadmore.
