WealdstoneWealdstone romped to another impressive away victory, this time to a struggling Farnborough side that will now need something of a miracle to survive relegation from the Vanarma Conference South.
It is very rare in the tough environs of the Conference that Stones will come up against a side that looked out of its depth but sadly for Cherrywood Road outfit this was the case on Saturday. But as the football cliché goes: you can only beat what it put in front you and Wealdstone certainly did that with some style particularly in a rampant and totally dominant first half in which Stones excellent keeper Jon North even saved a penalty.
Big striker Jefferson Louis was again the focus of attention and he blitzed the home side out of sight hitting the net twice in the first seven minutes and then claimed his first Stones hat-trick on the stroke of half time. Louis has now scored 8 league goals since his slow start in Stones colours but his performances since the end of January, however, have been nothing short of sensational. He is clearly enjoying his football again and that can only be good news for Stones fans.
Even so the match was not without cost as energetic and influential midfielder Luke O’Nien will be ruled out of Easter Monday’s big clash at The Vale with Ebbsfleet with a nasty looking shoulder injury. Better news though is that Scott Davies should be available on Monday following his foot problem sustained against Gosport three weeks ago but fellow midfielder Mickey Corcoran, absent on Saturday is side-lined with a hamstring.
Stones Manager Gordon Bartlett was delighted with the three points: ‘We set ourselves a target of achieving 50 points and we have now exceeded that and we are now only two points behind Ebbsfleet. We dominated completely in the first half but were sloppy in the second as we became too comfortable; we will push on and aim to finish as high as possible’
Louis blasted home from an angled drive after only 3 minutes and his second arrived four minutes later after young keeper Magnus Norman saw his clearance charged down by Matt Ball and when the former Boro midfielder rolled the ball across the goal Louis nipped in to tap home for the simplest of goals.
Farnborough tried hard to turn their possession into a threat but the Stones defence stood firm and restricted the home side to a few half chances. Louis netted again late in the first period following a super Stones build up and it was game over. Stones had even been able to survive a penalty kick on the stroke of half-time when North saved superbly from Jamie White for a killer psychological blow.
The second half was only three minutes old when Scott McGleish headed home from a Ball corner and then the game petered out as a spectacle but there was time for some petulance from the home side as the experienced Jamie Hand was sent off for a second bookable offence. White did grab a late, late consolation for Boro from a flowing move but by then the game was well and truly lost leaving Stones to focus on a hugely tougher clash on Easter Monday at The Vale.
