Wealdstone 1 – 2 Wycombe Wanderers
1 - 2
Another decent performance from Stones on Tuesday evening and a valuable test against League Two side Wycombe Wanderers. Wealdstone were certainly not at full strength though, with Sean Cronin, Tom Hamblin, Jerome Okimo and Scott McGleish all unavailable for this friendly encounter.
Wycombe too struggled for numbers as they are in the midst of a wholesale transition following last season’s flirtation with relegation. But this was not a weak Chairboys line up. Nikki Ahamed made a surprise appearance from the bench having left the home side three seasons ago and the ex Chelsea Youth player scored Stones equalising goal before Wycombe grabbed a late winner.
It was the away side that almost took the lead after 8 minutes play when ‘keeper Jonathan North could only parry a fierce strike but Steven Craig hit the lose ball against an upright. Stones soon started to take some control over proceedings and a great save from Charlie Horlock prevented Luke Pigden’s powerful free kick from entering the net. An excellent move involving Johnny Wright and Michael Malcolm saw the lively Joe Turner shoot just over after Tom Hickey had broken free only to see his strike blocked by the excellent Horlock.
Wealdstone were far less dominant in the second period and the away side perked up considerably with several changes, notably ex Stones loanee Matt McClure looked very lively. In fact it was McClure that stole in to grab a soft goal from a corner a few minutes into the half after a rare defensive lapse. Stones also rung the changes and Daniel Wishart caught the eye with some strong runs although the ex Alfreton forward needs far more playing time to regain full fitness.
North pulled off some good stops before Ahamed’s neat finish 5 minutes from time, made by Wright’s excellent run, was usurped by a late winner from sub Sam Wood.
Wealdstone: North, Mills, Little, Parker, Hammond, Godfrey, Wright, Pigden, Malcolm, Hickey, Turner. Subs used: Collins, McCluskey, Wishart, Ahamed. N/u: Carter (UK), Smith.
