Bognor Regis TownWealdstone claimed a precious three points in the Ryman League title race no Saturday as they overcame promotion rivals Bognor Regis Town 1-0 in a tightly contested game.
A superbly taken goal from Alex Dyer did the damage for Stones catapulting them to second in the league table, 10 points behind leaders Whitehawk but with two games in hand, and taking full advantage of other non playing rivals who games fell foul of the weather.
There were two changes in personnel from the side which had drawn at Hastings on Tuesday night, with Scott McCubbin starting at left back in place of the unavailable Lee Chappell, and Tom Pett coming in for Richard Jolly.
The game’s first opening came in the seventh minute when McCubbin picked out Peter Dean on the edge of the box. Dean threaded the ball through to Chris Moore who beat the offside trap but the former Brentford man’s touch was too heavy and he was forced wide where he could only side foot the wrong side of the post.
The combination of Dean and Moore created another opening on 13 minutes when Alex Dyer was put through by a great ball from McCubbin. Dyer fired the ball across the box which just missed the onrushing Dean, but was picked up by Moore to the edge of the box where he was able to loft it back in to Dean whose point blank header was somehow palmed away by Tom Boyle in the Bognor goal.
Boyle came to the away side’s rescue again five minutes later when some neat build up play saw Moore cleverly flick the ball into the path of Dyer who tried to pull it back across the box to the waiting Dean, but the Rocks ‘keeper was able to intercept.
The first decent chance for the visitors came on the half hour mark, Kane Willis lofting the ball into the box where Lewis Stockford was able to get past McCubbin before firing a left footed shot which was well saved by Rikki Banks.
Pett was next to go close for the home side five minutes before the break, flicking a header just wide of the post following a cross from James Hammond.
Terry Dodd missed a guild edged chance for Bognor on 52 minutes when Jordan Clarke made space for himself down the left before picking out the centre forward in the box who somehow headed well over from close range.
A slip from McCubbin then gave Town another glorious chance five minutes later when the full back was caught in possession by Doug Tuck giving him a clear run at goal, however his effort was well saved by the feet of Banks who was in top form.
It was looking like becoming a frustrating afternoon for Wealdstone but they grabbed the lead with a well worked goal on 74 minutes. It looked like Dean had over hit a pass down the right hand side, but Moore didn’t give up on it; keeping the ball in before laying it back to Dean. Dean was then able to lay the ball off to Dyer on the edge of the box who finished with great aplomb past Boyle.
Stones looked a lot more confident after the goal, and Moore had two chances to double the lead in the final ten minutes. First firing wide when well placed at the back post after being picked out by McCubbin then 90 seconds later he darted into the box from the left hand side before drilling the ball across the face of goal and wide.
Bognor had a great chance to pull the game level in the last minute when a high and hopeful ball into the box was headed goal wards by Stuart Axten and although his effort beat Banks, Dean came spectacularly to the rescue heading the ball away from under the cross bar to preserve a precious three points for his side.
