This was no ‘evening after the Sunday before’ for Wealdstone as they quickly shook off any disappointment from their heroic FA Cup defeat by Rotherham United only two days previously. The match was a personal triumph for striker Chris Ellerbeck who scored a well taken hat trick of goals, opening his competitive account emphatically. Ellerbeck partnered Ross Lafayette up front, replacing a rested Charlie Mpi.

Stones took the lead after 15 minutes when a Wood defensive mix up allowed Ellerbeck to coolly shoot past Wood Keeper Courtnage. Then 13 minutes later, after a brilliant run by Kieron Forbes, a pass to the nmarked Ellerbeck brought him his second of the evening.

Wood clawed a goal back from a rasping 20 yard fee kick by Chris Watters that gave Sean Thomas no chance.

HT 2-1

In the second half the away side came into the tie much more strongly and forced Thomas into making several outstanding saves – one from almost point blank range.
Stones finished off the Hertfordshire side to progress to the next round of the league cup on 68 minutes. Following a Danny Spendlove cross from left, Jamie Osborne sold a dummy and man of the match Ellerbeck was waiting to calmly steer the ball home from 8 yards out.

Team line up to follow.
